Srinagar, Nov 07: Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Zaffer Mir (Lasjan) on Thursday urged the newly formed government to address the longstanding burden of electricity bills that have weighed down Jammu and Kashmir’s marginalised sections for years now.
“While providing 200 free units to economically weaker families is a good step, it means little when people are still buried under years of unpaid bills,” Mir said in a statement issued here.
He said that since 2019, electricity costs have surged, and many low-income families have been facing monthly bills that have nearly doubled. “Families are struggling under the weight of these rising fees; some have seen their bills jump from Rs 1,400 to Rs 2,750. Coupled with smart meter installations and revised load agreements, these higher charges are pushing our vulnerable communities to the brink,” he added.
The PDP leader called for a complete waiver on outstanding principal amounts through an amnesty, saying that only this measure could make the new scheme genuinely impactful. “The government must provide real relief to those who can’t pay, not just by offering free units moving forward, but by clearing their past dues,” Mir asserted, hoping for an urgent response to lift this financial burden from the most affected families in J&K.
