Srinagar, April 02: Male passengers in Kashmir have raised concerns over the recent fare hike in government-owned buses, alleging that the move is unfair. The fare increase was implemented following the government’s decision to provide free bus rides for women passengers, effective April 1.
While the initiative to offer free transportation for women has been widely welcomed, male commuters argue that the burden of higher fares on them is unjustified. Several passengers shared their grievances with Rising Kashmir, stating that such a policy should not come at their expense.
“This is a welcome step that the government has provided free bus service for women, but at the same time, they should not increase the fare for male passengers,” said Aijaz Ahmad, a daily commuter from Srinagar.
Irfan Lone, a salesman in Lal Chowk, questioned the logic behind the decision. “Does this make any sense? We are already struggling with rising costs, and now the government has put an additional burden on us,” he said.
Many male passengers echoed similar concerns, stating that while women’s welfare is important, it should not lead to discrimination against others.
Mohammad Yousuf, a government employee, stated, “If the government wants to help women, it should fund the initiative from its resources rather than increasing fares for male passengers.”
Meanwhile, several female passengers welcomed the move, stating that all passengers should be treated fairly. “It is a great relief for us, and we appreciate this decision. However, authorities must ensure that the fare hike does not cause hardship to others,” said Shaista Bano, a college student.
The National Conference (NC) had promised free bus services for women in its election manifesto, and the recent implementation of this initiative in Jammu and Kashmir is part of that commitment. However, the concerns raised by male passengers highlight the need for a balanced approach that benefits all commuters.
