Srinagar, Feb 25: In a groundbreaking medical achievement, Paras Health Srinagar has successfully performed an advanced 3D rapid prototyping-based free flap reconstruction on a 30-year-old man diagnosed with residual sarcoma of the upper jaw.

This cutting-edge procedure, rarely performed in India, involved precise preoperative planning and anatomical modelling, significantly improving surgical accuracy and reducing operative time.

The patient had previously undergone treatment for sarcoma, but remnants of the disease necessitated a complex surgical intervention. A multidisciplinary team, including oncologists, reconstructive surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists at Paras Health Srinagar, meticulously planned the procedure using 3D printing technology to ensure precise reconstruction of the affected area.

The surgical team, led by Dr Azhar Jan Battoo, Associate Director of Surgical Oncology, alongside Dr Abid Saleem, Senior Oncoplastic Surgeon, and Dr Waseem Bhat, Onco-Prosthodontist, utilised high-resolution CT and MRI scans to generate a detailed 3D model of the patient’s jaw. This model guided the precise shaping of a fibula-free flap—bone harvested from the patient’s leg—to recreate the jaw structure. Using advanced microsurgical techniques, the reconstructed jaw was successfully connected to the patient’s blood supply, ensuring viability.

Dr Azhar Jan Battoo highlighted the significance of the procedure, stating, “The integration of 3D rapid prototyping allowed us to achieve unparalleled precision. The ability to pre-shape the graft before surgery ensured a perfect fit, enhancing both function and aesthetics. The patient was discharged in excellent condition within five days, and following final dental rehabilitation, he will regain full oral functionality and lead a normal life.”

The procedure not only restored the patient’s jaw but also set a new benchmark in head and neck cancer reconstruction in the region. A temporary prosthesis was placed, with permanent dental implants scheduled within the next 5-6 months, ensuring complete restoration of oral function.

Paras Health Srinagar continues to lead the way in integrating state-of-the-art medical technology with expert clinical care, reaffirming its commitment to providing world-class oncological and reconstructive surgery.
