Srinagar, Jan 26: Kashmiri weaver Farooq Ahmed Mir has been honored with the prestigious Padma Shri for his exceptional craftsmanship, recognizing his dedication to preserving traditional weaving arts.
From humble beginnings, Mir’s unwavering passion for handloom weaving has earned him national acclaim, inspiring artisans and the younger generation to reconnect with their cultural heritage.
A resident of Srinagar, Mir began his journey as a weaver in his childhood and expressed profound gratitude upon receiving the honor. Despite being illiterate, his unmatched skill and commitment to the craft have made him a torchbearer for Kashmir’s rich cultural traditions. “This award is not just for me; it is for every artisan who has worked tirelessly to keep our traditions alive,” he said with pride.
Reflecting on his early years, Mir shared with Rising Kashmir that his work was often met with criticism from locals. “Many people looked down upon this profession, but I believed in the beauty and importance of our craft,” he recalled. Today, the recognition he has received has silenced critics and inspired many others. “Now, people are congratulating me in large numbers, and it feels like a validation of my life’s work,” he added with a smile.
However, Mir also expressed concern over the declining interest of the younger generation in traditional crafts. “The new generation needs to realize the importance of preserving this heritage. Handloom weaving is not only an art; it is also a respectable source of income. I urge young people to embrace this craft and take pride in it,” he emphasized.
The Padma Shri award has not only elevated Farooq Ahmed Mir’s stature but also highlighted the importance of safeguarding Kashmir’s weaving traditions. His journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring artisans and underscores the significance of preserving India’s diverse cultural legacy.
Mir’s achievement stands as a beacon of hope for the artisan community, encouraging them to strive for excellence while honouring their roots. For Farooq Ahmed Mir, this recognition marks the culmination of decades of hard work, determination, and an unwavering commitment to his craft. “I am truly happy and grateful to live in a country that values our heritage and recognizes our contributions,” he said with humility.
