Srinagar, Feb 07: A non-local labourer was shot dead and another was critically injured after unknown terrorists fired upon them in Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar on Wednesday. Both were rushed immediately to SMHS hospital, where doctors declared one of them brought dead while the other was being treated, officials said.
A police officer said that terrorists fired upon a non-local identified as Amritpal Singh resident of Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Srinagar, who succumbed to the injuries.
“One more person is grievously injured and evacuated for medical attention. Area has been cordoned off. Further details shall follow”, he said.
The spokesman said that the victims have been identified as Amritpal Singh & Rohit, R/O Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Srinagar.
“In this terror incident, Amritpal Singh succumbed to his injuries while Rohit was shifted to Hospital for treatment. Area cordoned off. Details shall follow,” he added.
A health official said that one bullet-injured person has been identified as Rohit, aged 27, son of Prem Mashi, resident of Punjab. He was brought to SMHS with a bullet wound in his left abdomen.
Soon after the attack, senior officers of Police and CRPF rushed to the spot. Teams of J&K Police and Army cordoned off the area to trace and arrest the terrorists involved in the attack.
A senior police official told Rising Kashmir that they are thoroughly examining the incident from various perspectives. CCTV footage of nearby areas is being ascertained and hopefully attackers will be nabbed soon.
“We have registered the case and investigation is underway,” he said. Mobile vehicle checkpoints have been established at all major intersections in Srinagar as well as at the city’s exit points.
Pertinent to mention here, earlier in December 2023, a retired senior superintendent of police (SSP) Mohammad Shafi Mir was shot dead by terrorists when he was giving call for early morning prayers at a local mosque in Sheeri Baramulla district in north Kashmir.
