Deficit down from 34% to 16% Rise in day temp expected over next 5 days
Srinagar, Apr 10: The seasonal rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir has touched normal levels as frequent wet spells in the region have brought the precipitation deficit down from 34 per cent last month to just 16 per cent, according to data accessed by Rising Kashmir.
The data revealed that the region witnessed rainfall of 151.1 mm against the normal precipitation of 179.9 mm from March 1 to April 8, 2026, amounting to a shortage of only 16 per cent for the season.
The highest deficiency was recorded in Shopian district with a 74 per cent deficit, receiving only 30.9 mm of precipitation against a normal of 118.5 mm. Shopian in South Kashmir remains the only station with a large deficit, recording a shortage of 66 per cent during the period.
In Srinagar, normal precipitation was recorded with a shortage of just 17 per cent. Baramulla in north Kashmir recorded no shortage, while Ganderbal and Reasi recorded rainfall two per cent and three per cent above normal, respectively. Kupwara recorded a shortage of just eight per cent. Poonch and Rajouri recorded excess rainfall, while Samba recorded 85 per cent above normal precipitation.
However, several stations continued to record deficit rainfall, including Anantnag, Budgam, Bandipora, Doda, Kathua, Kishtwar, Kulgam, Pulwama, Ramban, and Udhampur, with shortages ranging from 20 per cent to 59 per cent.
The decline in shortage was reported amid frequent rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir during April, with the weatherman predicting more short wet spells in the region in the coming days.
According to Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad, the weather is expected to remain partly to generally cloudy with a brief spell of light rain at scattered places towards late afternoon and evening hours on Saturday. Generally, dry weather is expected on April 12, with a possibility of a brief spell of light rain at isolated places towards the afternoon hours.
The weather would remain generally dry on April 13 and 14, as well as on April 15, with a possibility of a brief spell of light rain at isolated places towards the afternoon hours. On April 16 and 17, generally cloudy weather is again forecast, with a possibility of a spell of light rain and thundershower at scattered places towards late afternoon and evening hours. Dry weather conditions are expected from April 18 to April 20.
The Director has advised farmers to resume all farm operations and added that a gradual rise in day temperature is expected during the next five days at many places.
