Srinagar, Aug 30: The National Conference (NC) has raised serious concerns over the continued closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) for the fifth consecutive day, urging immediate action to prevent devastating losses to the region’s horticulture sector. The blockade, caused by persistent rains and mudslides, has left hundreds of trucks carrying perishable fruits stranded, while the harvest continues to pile up in orchards across the valley. In a statement issued here, NC’s State Spokesperson, Imran Nabi, cautioned that the ongoing disruptions could result in heavy economic losses. “Around 300 to 400 trucks carrying fruits like pears and early varieties of apples are stuck on the highway. If the situation is not addressed soon, the losses will amount to crores. This trade supports the livelihoods of thousands of families, and perishable fruit cannot wait,” he said.Imran said the horticulture sector, which forms the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, was facing a grave crisis. “Our orchards are overflowing, mandis are packed, and trucks have been stuck for days. If this continues, it will have a catastrophic impact on poor growers and traders. The government must step in immediately to safeguard the horticulture industry and prevent further damage,” he added. The spokesperson appreciated the efforts of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in proactively addressing the crisis. “Today only, Omar Sb convened a meeting of officials concerned to address the issue. I am hopeful that with him at the helm of affairs, the horticulturists will not face the same problem which they have been facing over the previous years,” he said.In addition to addressing the highway issue, Dar expressed sympathy with the flood-affected people in Jammu and appreciated the efforts of the government in managing the situation. “I commend the proactive approach of the Omar Abdullah government in assisting the flood-affected areas. The government’s response has been swift, demonstrating its deep connection with the people,” he said. “However, we hope that the government will also consider the impact of these weather-related challenges on the highway and take necessary measures accordingly.”
