Srinagar, Jan 21: Ahead of the Republic Day celebrations, Kashmir has been placed under a robust security framework, with a three-tier security system set up around key locations, including Sher-i-Kashmir Cricket Stadium and other major venues across the Valley. Officials confirmed that enhanced security arrangements are in place in all ten districts of the region.
Speaking to the media, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone, Vidhi Kumar Birdi, assured that strong security measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of attendees during the Republic Day parade.
“Preparations for the 26th of January are in full swing. Multi-tiered security arrangements will be in place to ensure smooth conduct of the celebrations, with sufficient security personnel deployed at all key locations,” IGP Birdi said.
Regarding the ongoing operation in Sopore, IGP Birdi explained that the operation was launched based on specific intelligence inputs and aimed at dismantling a terrorist hideout. “During the exchange of fire, an army jawan sustained critical injuries and later succumbed to his wounds. The operation has now concluded,” he added.
Earlier, security forces resumed searches at Zaloora Gujjarpati on Tuesday morning but called off the operation later in the day. The operation, which began on Sunday, was initiated after a fire was detected inside a suspected hideout.
Meanwhile, drone footage of the slain soldier has been circulating on social media, prompting an advisory from the police urging the public to refrain from sharing such videos. “These videos can compromise the security of the state,” a police spokesperson warned.
Sopore police also issued a statement on its X (formerly Twitter) handle, urging people to avoid sharing sensitive details about the Zaloora incident. “Such actions are irresponsible and can endanger state security,” the statement read.
On Monday, Sepoy Pangala Kartheek was injured in the exchange of fire with terrorists in a hideout at Zaloora Gujjarpati in the Sopore police district and died as he was being evacuated from the encounter site.
An official from the Police Department told Rising Kashmir that both the police and the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have intensified patrolling, vehicle checks, and frisking at various flashpoints in Srinagar and other parts of the Valley. “A new security plan has been devised, and deployment will remain in place to ensure the smooth conduct of Republic Day functions across the region,” the official stated.
Security forces have also been closely monitoring all entry and exit points leading to the city. In Srinagar, police and paramilitary forces continued vehicle checks and frisking in areas such as Lal Chowk. “Random frisking of cars and motorcycles is being carried out across the city to prevent any potential militant activities,” the official added.
Drones, camera-fitted vehicles, and CCTV will be used to monitor the overall security situation during the Republic Day functions. “Police and security forces are committed to ensuring a peaceful atmosphere throughout Kashmir,” the official concluded.
