Sonia Verma, a dedicated volunteer from Akhnoor in Jammu, has emerged as a prominent green warrior in her community, planting over 60,000 trees over the past several years. Fueled by concerns over environmental degradation and the diminishing green cover due to rampant construction and road development, Verma has taken it upon herself to initiate large-scale plantation drives.
The 40-year-old social worker, supported and encouraged by her husband, embarked on her tree-planting journey four years ago. Recognizing the consequences of widespread deforestation and pollution, Verma has been determined to make a positive impact on the environment for future generations.
Verma’s tree-planting efforts encompass a variety of tree species, including Indian Gooseberry (Amla), Tecoma stans (Yellow Bells), Jamun, Crepe Jasmine, Arjun, and Gulmohar (Royal Poinciana). Her plantations are strategically located in educational institutions, riverbanks, public parks, and other areas accessible to the public.
Not only does Verma plant the trees, but she also diligently tends to them until they reach a standard height. In cases where she cannot personally care for the trees, she seeks assistance from nearby residents, urging them to take responsibility for nurturing the plants she has planted.
Verma’s commitment extends beyond her own efforts; she actively promotes community involvement in her plantation drives. During the annual March and April campaigns, she distributes tree saplings to individuals, encouraging their active participation in safeguarding the environment.
“This year, I procured and distributed around 3,000 plants at my own expense, emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation. Failure to act now will undoubtedly lead to remorse in the future,” Verma affirmed.
Drawing attention to the gradual disappearance of trees and greenery in Jammu due to human activities, Verma’s motivation stems from her desire to transform public spaces into verdant havens. Through her initiatives, she has successfully planted trees at various locations, including Akhnoor Middle School, Panyadi, Gurha Brahmana East, Jourian, Chowki Churo, Khour, arid villages, and Gram Panchayats.
Verma believes that planting trees, particularly in schools and their surroundings, plays a vital role in raising awareness among students and the community about the significance of environmental conservation. She emphasizes that exposing children and young students to nature helps them develop an appreciation for the environment and the crucial role it plays in maintaining a healthy ecosystem.
“We inhabit a world plagued by increasing plastic use, air and water pollution, and environmental changes. It serves as a wake-up call for us to reflect on the future generations who will hold us accountable if we harm the environment,” Verma expressed.
After years of dedicated plantation efforts, Verma remains resolute in her mission to expand greenery and actively contribute to creating a greener environment in her vicinity and other parts of Jammu. Her relentless dedication serves as an inspiration to individuals and communities alike, highlighting the transformative power of individual action in combatting environmental challenges.
