Abdul Majeed Bhat (Larmi), the National Conference (NC) representative for the newly created Anantnag-West Assembly constituency, has unveiled an ambitious vision for the region’s development, focusing on transforming Qazigund—the “Gateway of Kashmir”—into a more inviting destination.
In an exclusive interview with Rising Kashmir, MLA Larmi expressed his determination to enhance Qazigund, ensuring it leaves visitors with a lasting first impression of Kashmir’s stunning beauty.
“Qazigund has long lacked essential development due to political interference. My goal is to shape it into a true gateway that reflects the beauty and uniqueness of Kashmir,” he stated.
Larmi outlined his priority projects, which include significant upgrades to Qazigund, revitalization of the Achabal tourist area, construction of a flyover in Anantnag, and the addition of an MRI machine at Anantnag Hospital. He emphasized the importance of local control over mining contracts to ensure economic benefits for the Kashmiri people and improve road connectivity throughout the constituency.
Highlighting the neglected infrastructure at Achabal, the MLA noted the absence of basic facilities, including a tehsil office and sports stadium. “Achabal has been overlooked for years. We need to invest in its tourist potential and create amenities for the local community,” he said.
A strong advocate for sports as a means to combat drug abuse, MLA Larmi plans to construct stadiums in villages to promote youth participation. “Sports can transform lives, keeping our youth engaged and away from harmful activities,” he added.
Larmi is also focused on enhancing health and education services within the constituency. He emphasized the urgent need for improved healthcare, as many hospitals lack sufficient doctors and equipment. He vowed to ensure that government schools receive resources comparable to those available in private institutions.
Expressing disappointment over the absence of public facilities, especially marriage halls and reliable electricity infrastructure, Larmi highlighted the outdated Wanpoh grid station, which currently lacks a dedicated division. “Upgrading our power infrastructure is crucial to meet the needs of our growing population,” he said.
In terms of rural development, he criticized the limited funding beyond NREGA, promising to seek additional resources to support village infrastructure projects, such as tiled lanes—an initiative he had previously championed in his former constituency of Homeshalibugh.
Lastly, MLA Larmi addressed the need to enhance healthcare facilities in Qazigund, particularly the Trauma Hospital, and improve staffing at the PHC Laram Gangipora (L.G. Pora). He emphasized the necessity of night duty and round-the-clock healthcare services, particularly for hospitals located near the national highway. “These services are vital for our community’s health and well-being,” he asserted.
