MLA Langate and Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) leader Sheikh Khurshid has urged the Lieutenant Governor and the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir to immediately announce ex-gratia relief for the family of a Uri resident who recently died due to suffocation in Srinagar.
During a condolence visit to the victim’s family in Uri, the MLA expressed concern over the delay in providing financial assistance. He stated that such cases should not be viewed through a discriminatory, regional, or communal lens, adding that similar cases in the past had received prompt ex-gratia relief in the Jammu division.
He pointed out that in incidents like the Kishtwar cloudburst and the Jammu terror attack, an immediate ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh was announced. However, in these cases, there has been a deliberate delay, which should be avoided, he said.
Referring to another similar incident reported in the Tangmarg area, he noted that the affected family there also had not received any ex-gratia relief. He added that while Red Cross assistance is helpful, it is not sufficient to support grieving families in such distressing situations.
Highlighting the plight of the victim’s parents, both of whom are paralyzed, the MLA stressed that the government must take the matter seriously and provide adequate financial support to the bereaved family.
