Srinagar, Aug 04: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), through its MeT Centre in Srinagar, has issued a nowcast warning predicting moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in the districts of Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, and Udhampur in the Jammu region over the next two to three hours.

The alert warns of potential flash floods, landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas. Authorities have been advised to take all necessary precautions to ensure public safety and reduce risk.

People residing in affected areas have been urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel, especially through regions prone to landslides and flooding. Emergency teams and control rooms have been placed on standby to respond quickly in case of any disruption.

Director MeT Srinagar, Dr.Mukhtar Ahmad, told Rising Kashmir that the weather on August 5 is expected to remain hot and humid during the daytime, with light to moderate rain and thundershowers likely at several places across Jammu and Kashmir.

However, he cautioned that there is a strong possibility of intense showers and heavy rainfall in certain parts of Jammu Division, particularly in Rajouri, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda, Jammu, and Kathua, mostly during late night or early morning hours.

“From August 6 to 9, the weather will generally remain hot and humid with the chance of brief, scattered rain showers. Between August 10 and 12, fresh spells of light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected at many places, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in parts of the Jammu region,”  Dr Mukhtar said.

In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the IMD has advised extreme caution, especially during the period from August 4 to 6, when intense rainfall is forecast. The threat of flash floods and landslides is particularly high in hilly terrain and low-lying vulnerable areas.

As a precautionary measure, the Meteorological Department has recommended that farmers suspend all farming operations until August 6 to avoid crop damage and ensure their safety.

Officials added that the situation is being closely monitored, and updates will be provided as necessary. Residents are advised to stay informed through official weather bulletins, avoid risky travel routes, and refrain from sharing or acting on unverified information.
