Srinagar, Nov 12: A fresh encounter broke out between terrorists and security forces in Lolab  area Kupwara district on Tuesday late evening. The Army, police, and CRPF have launched a search operation to track down the terrorists.

Army’s Chinar Corps in a post on X said that on 12 Nov 24, based on specific intelligence input regarding the presence of terrorists, a joint operation launched by Indian Army and Police in general area Nagmarg, Bandipora.

“Suspicious activity was observed by vigilant troops and on being challenged terrorists opened indiscriminate fire. Own troops effectively retaliated,” he said.

A police officer said based on specific intelligence inputs, an anti-infiltration operation was launched in the dense forests of Lolab and Nagmarg forests. Contact was established with hiding terrorists and operation is in progress, he added.

“The hiding terrorists opened fire on the security personnel, who retaliated, thereby triggering a gunfight. Firing has stopped now, search operation has been intensified,” he said.

The official said the entire forest belt is still under tight security cordon to neutralise the terrorists. The area is mountainous and the forest is dense, making the operation difficult and dangerous.  We have deployed additional companies to the nearby areas” he said.

The police officer said that it is the same group of terrorists that was roaming in the region. They have recently infiltrated.  We are hopeful that we will succeed in eliminating the entire group of terrorists involved in this attack,” he added.

“The encounter started on Wednesday and 2-3 terrorists have been trapped in the forest area. Hopefully they will be neutralized soon,” he said, adding that drones, and more troops have arrived in the area to track their movement.

Meanwhile, a high alert has been issued in Lolab and Nagmarg forest range and security has been tightened, with ‘Naka’ checking and rigorous vehicle inspections implemented across the region.

Over the past two weeks, 7 gunfight, 8 terrorists have been killed.

On November 09, a terrorist was killed in an encounter in Rampura Rajpura, Sopore.

Earlier, on November 08, two terrorists were eliminated in Sagipora, Sopore, in what security forces termed a “major success.”

On November 06, another terrorist was killed in Lolab, Kupwara, with an AK series rifle recovered.

The operations began on November 05 with the killing of a terrorist in Bandipora, although two security personnel were injured during the exchange of fire.
