Ganderbal, March 06: In a bid to ensure compliance with food safety regulations and prevent overpricing during the holy month of Ramadhan, a joint team of Food Safety, Revenue and Police departments intensified market inspections in the Kangan area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Thursday and destroyed the rotten food items.
The inspections were conducted under the supervision of NT Kangan/Plung Mohd Shafi and the designated officer of Food Safety, Ganderbal.
During the surprise checks, the team discovered several violations, including the sale of substandard and rotten food items. The officials promptly destroyed the spoiled vegetables and other perishable goods to safeguard public health. Additionally, a fine of Rs. 6,000 was imposed on violators under the Food Safety and Standards (FSS) Act-2006 and Rules and Regulations-2011.
An official from the Food Safety Department stated, “The market checking drive will continue throughout Ramadhan to ensure that shopkeepers adhere to the prescribed rate lists and quality standards. Strict action will be taken against anyone found violating the norms.”
The move comes in response to rising concerns over the escalation of essential commodity prices as the fasting month began. Earlier, Rising Kashmir had highlighted the issue, prompting authorities to take immediate notice and step up market surveillance. The intensified checks aim to protect consumers from unfair practices and ensure the availability of quality food items at reasonable prices during the holy month. Authorities have urged the public to report any instances of overpricing or the sale of substandard goods to help maintain market discipline.
