Jammu, Jan 05: The 2024 Lok Sabha elections and the long overdue assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to be held simultaneously, with BJP National President JP Nadda set to discuss the party’s preparations for both polls during his visit to the Union Territory on Sunday.
Kavinder Gupta, former Deputy Chief Minister and ex-Speaker of the J&K Assembly, informed Rising Kashmir, “The party high command has instructed us to be well-prepared for both the 2024 Parliamentary elections and Assembly elections, which could potentially be conducted concurrently in J&K.”
Citing the communication from the party’s high command, Gupta said, “Our J&K unit has been directed by the high command to be thoroughly prepared for Lok Sabha and assembly elections as they are expected to be held simultaneously.”
The BJP National President, JP Nadda, is slated to visit Jammu on Sunday. He will engage in discussions about the party’s preparations for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections and will also seek feedback on the performance of all BJP MPs.
The J&K BJP unit has been instructed by the party high command to be fully prepared and present its report on preparations for both elections to Nadda.
The Union government told the parliament on December 5 last year that it is ready to hold elections in Jammu & Kashmir and it is for the Election Commission to announce the schedule whenever it feels appropriate.
In a landmark judgment on Article 370, the Supreme Court today ordered the Election Commission to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024. Supreme Court said this while delivering its verdict on the constitutionality of the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which gives the special status to J&K.
In the same month, December 11, the Supreme Court asked the Central government to hold elections in Jammu and Kashmir by 30 September 2024 and restore statehood at the earliest.
“We direct that steps shall be taken by the Election Commission of India to conduct elections to the Legislative Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir by 30 September 2024,” said CJI reading judgment in Article 370 matter.
