Leh, June 04: In a significant development aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and emergency response mechanisms in the Union Territory, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh has appointed the Director General of Police (DGP) as the Director of Civil Defence.
The appointment has been made in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (2) of Section 4, read with Clause (f) of Section 2 of the Civil Defence Act, 1968 (Act No. 27 of 1968).
According to the official notification, the DGP will now also serve as the Director of Civil Defence for Ladakh. In this capacity, the officer will be entrusted with all powers and responsibilities laid down under the Civil Defence Act, along with the rules and regulations formulated under it.
The move is aimed at ensuring the effective implementation and management of Civil Defence operations in Ladakh, a region that often contends with harsh climatic conditions, difficult terrain, and other emergency challenges. The dual role is expected to bolster coordination between law enforcement and civil defence units in times of crisis.
