Ladakh, Nov 28: Rinchen Youdol, a remarkable Para Taekwondo athlete from Ladakh, has etched her name in the annals of Indian sports history by clinching a Bronze Medal at the inaugural World Para Poomsae Taekwondo Championships held in Bahrain. Her achievement marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first woman from the Union Territory of Ladakh to win a medal at this prestigious event.
Hailing from the serene village of Bodhkharboo in Kargil, Ladakh, Rinchen is the daughter of Morup Dorjey and Stanzin Angmo. Her groundbreaking victory has brought immense pride to Ladakh and elevated India’s status on the global Taekwondo stage. Competing in the Senior Female Contestants (No Age Bar) category, she showcased extraordinary skill and determination against formidable opponents, including Janine Watson (Australia), Jane Bedford (Great Britain), and Eleni Nestora (Greece).
The championship, hosted under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed bin Duaij Al Khalifa, President of the Bahrain Paralympic Committee, featured 140 athletes from 23 countries across five continents. Rinchen’s triumph stands as a testament to her relentless dedication and years of hard work.
Reflecting on her victory, Rinchen shared, “It feels surreal. Representing Ladakh and India on such a grand stage has been an honor. Most people dream but don’t put in the effort—I did. This moment is the result of years of discipline. My dream, born when I was just 10 years old, has finally become a reality.”
The event also included a grand opening ceremony, with a parade of nations and a speech by World Taekwondo President, Dr. Chungwon Choue, who emphasized the growing importance of Para Taekwondo Poomsae and its anticipated inclusion in the LA 2028 Paralympic Games.
