Ladakh tragedy: Five soldiers killed after tank swept away by flash floods: Army

Ladakh, June 29:In a tragic accident near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Union Territory of Ladakh, at least five Army personnel lost their lives when their tank was swept away while crossing the Shyok River. The incident occurred on the night of June 28, 2024, as the soldiers were de-inducting from a military training activity.
The Indian Army’s Fire and Fury Corps reported the incident on the social media platform “X”: “On June 28, 2024 night, while de-inducting from a military training activity, an army tank got stuck in the Shyok River, near SaserBrangsa, Eastern Ladakh due to a sudden increase in the water level. Rescue teams rushed to the location; however, due to high current and water levels, the rescue mission didn’t succeed, and the tank crew lost their lives. Indian Army regrets the loss of five brave personnel while being operationally deployed in Eastern Ladakh. Rescue operations are underway.”
According to official sources, the accident took place in the Daulat Beg Oldie area of Ladakh during a tank exercise. The sudden rise in water levels in the river led to the tragic incident, claiming the lives of the Army personnel.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his condolences on “X,” stating: “Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate accident while getting the tank across a river in Ladakh. We will never forget the exemplary service of our gallant soldiers to the nation. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The nation stands firm with them during this hour of grief.”
Other notable figures also shared their condolences. CEC LAHDC, HCEC @drajaffer, expressed profound grief over the tragic loss, emphasizing the soldiers’ selfless service and supreme sacrifices.
CEC LadakhTashiGyalson added: “I am deeply saddened by the loss of five army personnel in the tragic incident in Ladakh. My heartfelt condolences to their families. Their sacrifice will always be remembered.”
Newly elected Member of Parliament for UT Ladakh, Haji Haneefa Jan, also mourned the tragic loss of the Indian soldiers in this incident. Renowned social activist KargilSajjadKargili wrote on “X”: “My hearts go out to their families, friends, and fellow soldiers in this time of profound grief. Their courage and dedication to protecting our nation will always be remembered. We stand in solidarity with the @adgpi forces and extend our deepest condolences.”
Rescue operations continue in the area as the nation mourns the loss of its brave soldiers. Meanwhile, SSP Leh mentioned that there are no confirmed details from the police yet, but they have heard that five army jawans lost their lives in the incident. She said that the area is remote, so it will take some time to confirm the information. She added that they are still ascertaining the details.

 

 

Amit Shah condoles loss of lives of Army soldiers
New Delhi, June 29 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday condoled the loss of lives of five Indian Army personnel whose T-72 tank was swept away in the Shyok River near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh, defence officials said on Saturday.
Assam Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda also expressed their condolences on the demise of Indian Army personnel.
Taking to X, Home Minister Amit Shah said, “I am saddened by the news of the accident during the military exercise in Ladakh. I express my condolences to the families of the brave soldiers who lost their lives in this accident. The whole country is with the families of the brave soldiers.”
Assam Chief Minister HimantaBiswaSarma on X expressed his pain over the loss of five Indian Army soldiers in the accident in Ladakh.
Sarma said, “Deeply pained by the loss of 5 of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate accident in Ladakh. My deepest condolences to their family members in this hour of grief. The nation will always remember their sacrifices for the motherland.”
Taking to ‘X’ Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda, said that the entire country stands united with the bereaved families during this hour of grief.
Nadda said, “Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of our brave Army soldiers during a training activity in Ladakh. My deepest condolences go out to the families of these soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Their brave and selfless dedication will always be remembered. The entire country stands united with the bereaved families during this hour of grief.”
“On the night of June 28, while de-inducting from a military training activity, an army tank got struck in the Shyok River, near SaserBrangsa, Eastern Ladakh, due to a sudden increase in the water level. Rescue teams rushed to the location, however, due to high current and water levels, the rescue mission didn’t succeed and the tank crew lost their lives,” Defence PRO, Leh said in a statement.
“Indian Army regrets the loss of five brave personnel while being operationally deployed in Eastern Ladakh. Rescue operations are underway,” the statement added. (ANI)
