Srinagar, Oct 30: In a concerted effort to empower farmers with the latest technological advancements in agriculture, KVK Srinagar organized a “Kissan Goshti” on Wednesday at its main campus. The event saw participation from over 100 farmers, including progressive farmers, agri-preneurs, poultry rearers, farm women, self-help groups, and NGOs from Srinagar’s agricultural zones, such as Harwan, Hazratbal, and Humhama.
Key stakeholders, including zonal officers and extension officials from departments of Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, and allied sectors, were joined by a team of scientists from KVK and experts like Dr. Tariq Rasool and Dr. Najeeb from the Division of Pathology. During the event, Head of KVK Srinagar, Dr. Shamim Simnani, emphasized SKUAST-K’s commitment to the prosperity of the local farming community, stating that the Goshti aimed to equip farmers for the upcoming Kharif season, introduce crop diversification, and familiarize them with agronomic innovations such as nutrient management and integrated pest and disease management.
An interactive session allowed farmers to discuss challenges and receive insights from scientists and department officials. Additionally, farmers raised administrative concerns about irrigation and the need for immediate restoration of traditional canals, which were discussed in the District Irrigation Plan meeting the same day at the DC office.
The program concluded with a vote of thanks from Mohd Amin Mir, General Secretary of NGO IHRO, who commended KVK’s robust outreach efforts over the past year, which have addressed many challenges facing farmers at the grassroots level.
