Srinagar, July 24: Managing Director of Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL), Mussarat Islam, announced today that the installation of smart meters for all remaining domestic consumers will be completed within the next 27 months under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
Islam emphasized that the initiative aims to enhance transparency and efficiency in the billing system. He clarified that KPDCL is not authorized to implement or announce any tariff increases, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC) for Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir.
Islam addressed concerns regarding billing discrepancies and explained that the focus is on load revision rather than tariff hikes. He also highlighted ongoing efforts to resolve billing disputes, with the current billing accuracy between 95% and 97%.
Regarding relief measures for consumers, Islam noted that while the JERC handles tariff relief, the power amnesty scheme introduced in 2022 allows for forgiveness of late payment surcharges for those settling principal amounts.
KPDCL remains committed to improving power infrastructure and reducing losses, with a goal to provide reliable power supply within the next 18 months.
