Marathon to serve as platform for showcasing local culture: Tourism Director
Srinagar, Oct 19: In a landmark event, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah will inaugurate the first-ever International Marathon in Kashmir, set to begin at 6:15 am on Sunday from Polo View, Srinagar. The marathon marks a significant moment for the region’s sports scene, drawing over 2,000 participants, including 59 international athletes from 13 countries.
The marathon will feature a full 42-kilometer race and a 21-kilometer half marathon, offering participants a chance to run through the scenic Kashmir Valley.
Addressing the media, Director of Tourism, Raja Yaqoob Farooq, expressed excitement over the overwhelming response, stating, “We have more than 2,000 registrations, with athletes coming from 29 Union Territories and 13 foreign countries. This shows that Kashmir is emerging as a prime venue for international sports.”
The event aims to promote not just athleticism but also peace and tourism. “The marathon sends a message to the world that Kashmir is peaceful and ready to host global events. Our athletes will be ambassadors of our culture, showcasing the valley’s cuisine, Pashmina, paper mache, and more,” said Farooq.
Among the participants are top athletes from across the globe, including Kenyan marathoner Mark Kiptoo, who has competed in numerous prestigious races. Expressing his eagerness, Kiptoo said, “Running in a place as beautiful and culturally rich as Kashmir is an experience I’m looking forward to. I believe this event will inspire more athletes and tourists to visit the valley.”
The marathon will also feature local talent, with around 30 to 35 athletes from Kashmir joining the international competitors. Sunita, part of a group of 45 elite Indian runners, praised the warm hospitality in the region, saying, “Kashmir is known for its warmth, and we have felt it in every interaction. The planned tour to Gulmarg by the Tourism department shows how committed they are to making this event memorable.”
Offering the highest prize money for such events in the region, the marathon has been hailed by local sports officials. The Director of Sports and Youth Services in J&K said, “This event is a major step in putting Kashmir on the global sports map. It will attract more future events, boost the local economy, and promote a healthier lifestyle.”
