Srinagar, Jan 16: The department of handicrafts and handloom Kashmir Thursday took a significant step towards promoting and preserving the Valley’s rich cultural heritage by distributing 10 Kani looms and 25 sets of Namdah tools to local artisans at the handicraft block office in Safakadal, Srinagar.
This initiative is designed to support the artisans and enhance their ability to produce high-quality traditional handicrafts that have long been a hallmark of Kashmiri craftsmanship.
The event was presided over by Mussarat Islam, Director of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir, who highlighted the importance of such initiatives in empowering the Kashmir’s artisans. “This is a vital step towards enhancing the economic independence of our artisans. We are committed to providing them with the resources and opportunities needed to thrive in the global market,” Islam stated, stressing on the government’s focus on ensuring that these traditional crafts not only survive but thrive in an increasingly globalized world.
The distribution of the Kani looms—critical tools for weaving the famous Kashmiri Pashmina shawls—and Namdah tools for creating felted woollen products will significantly improve the quality and productivity of local artisans. These resources will not only enhance the artisans’ craftsmanship but also enable them to compete more effectively in both national and international markets.
Mohsina Irshad, the Assistant Director of Handicrafts, Srinagar, played a pivotal role in organizing and executing the event, ensuring the smooth distribution of tools to the artisans. Her efforts contribute to the department’s ongoing commitment to uplift the handicraft sector in Kashmir.
This distribution ceremony is part of the broader governmental push to preserve and promote Kashmir’s ancient craft traditions. Since Srinagar’s recognition as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) and its designation as a Craft City by the World Crafts Council (WCC), the Department has ramped up efforts to sustain and expand Kashmir’s craft legacy. The continued support for artisans, particularly through the provision of high-quality tools, plays a crucial role in this mission.
