Srinagar, Oct 26: Lauding the remarkable surge in tourism that Jammu and Kashmir has been experiencing, Secretary of Tourism and Culture, Syed Abid Rashid, said Kashmir has become a magnet for tourists, both domestic and international, in unprecedented numbers this year.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event held at the International Convention Centre in Srinagar, Rashid highlighted the significant boost in tourism in the region, attributing this surge to the recent G-20 event. He noted that, apart from the traditional winter destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, efforts are underway to explore additional winter hotspots in the area.
The Tourism Secretary underscored the vital role of the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir’s economy, contributing approximately 7.2% of the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and providing direct and indirect employment to over 22 lakh people. “The tourism sector is poised for remarkable success this year, offering a warm welcome to tourists eager to relish the winter season in the enchanting land of Kashmir,” he emphasized.
Furthermore, Rashid disclosed that a comprehensive evaluation of winter preparations has been conducted in Gulmarg, assuring tourists that the region is well-prepared to accommodate a significant influx of visitors during the upcoming season.
Regarding the Kailash Yatra, Secretary Tourism said that despite J&K having only one percent of the country’s population, it has taken a leading role in organizing all events under the banner of Azadi Ka Mahotsav.
