Jammu, Mar 08:
Jammu, Mar 08: Jammu and Kashmir continues to experience a remarkable surge in tourist arrivals, attracting over 1.3 crore domestic tourists, excluding pilgrims, in the past two years, according to government data. The region has also witnessed a steady rise in the number of foreign tourists, reinforcing its growing appeal on the global stage.
In response to a question raised by MLA Farooq Ahmad Shah in the Legislative Assembly, the government revealed that 55,15,679 tourists (excluding pilgrims) visited Jammu and Kashmir in 2023, while the number rose to 78,48,688 in 2024, reflecting a significant boost in tourism. The foreign tourist inflow has also shown consistent growth, with 55,327 visitors in 2023 and 65,452 in 2024, marking a steady rise in global interest in the region.
The surge in tourism can be attributed to a combination of factors, including improved infrastructure, enhanced security measures, and increased promotional efforts by the government. Initiatives such as the revival of heritage sites, promotion of winter tourism in Kashmir and Ladakh, and development of adventure sports and eco-tourism projects have further bolstered the region’s tourism sector.
Government officials remain optimistic that this upward trend will continue into 2025, with upcoming events like the Khelo India Winter Games in Ladakh and other cultural festivals expected to attract more visitors. The tourism sector plays a crucial role in the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, providing livelihood opportunities for thousands in the hospitality and allied industries.
Despite facing certain challenges, Jammu and Kashmir remains a top destination for foreign travellers, particularly from Europe, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. The rise in foreign arrivals underscores the region’s potential to become a global tourist hotspot, contingent on sustained promotional efforts and infrastructure development.
With this positive trajectory in tourist inflows, Jammu and Kashmir is well-positioned to further strengthen its reputation as a premier travel destination in South Asia.
