Srinagar, Aug 21:  Highlighting the increased focus on the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir after the G-20 meeting, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha emphasized the growing global interest in the region, especially considering recent developments.
Speaking during the inauguration of the J&K Textile Sourcing Fair at Kashmir University, Sinha said that increase in tourism influx reflects the UT’s potential as an emerging tourist hotspot.
Sinha pointed out a substantial 59 per cent surge in foreign tourist arrivals to Jammu and Kashmir subsequent to the successful Tourism Working Group meeting held in Srinagar.
“The Kashmir Valley, in particular, has been attracting international tourists, contributing to the dynamic growth of the tourism sector,” he added.
Sinha said that the rising influx of foreign visitors is anticipated to have a positive impact on the handloom and handicraft market.
Lt Governor also appreciated the J&K Trade Promotion Organization (JKTPO) and Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) for their endeavor to promote the export of handloom and handicraft products of J&K.
“The handloom and handicraft sector of J&K is ageless cultural asset of India, carrying a strong influence of our rich cultural diversity and spiritual traditions. It is the source of socio-economic growth to a large section of society and creating a rich pool of artisans,” the Lt Governor said.
Meanwhile, Sinha highlighted the region’s progress over the last three years, noting advancements in international connectivity, infrastructure, and the establishment of a comprehensive handloom and handicraft policy framework.
“This comprehensive approach aims to position Jammu and Kashmir at the forefront of global markets, solidifying its rightful place,” he said.
The Lieutenant Governor also spoke about the sector’s growth and emphasized the positive impact on craftsmen, their prosperity, and overall quality of life. To support artisans and weavers, the administration has introduced credit card facilities, ensuring easy access to financial resources to overcome potential challenges.
Recognising the artisans, the Lieutenant Governor commended the transformation of raw fibre into intricate pieces of art, which significantly bolsters the region’s economy. This convergence of traditional craftsmanship and economic progress creates a sustainable growth model.
As many 24 International and many domestic buyers are participating in the two-day Buyer-Seller meet.
