In a distressing incident, terrorists opened fire on a team from the Budgam district forest department in the early hours of today. The attack took place around 12:30 AM near Bangender Bridge, falling under the jurisdiction of JD PS Rajpora in Pulwama. The forest officials had set up a checkpoint to apprehend timber smugglers.

According to police, Two employees sustained injuries during the assault. Imran Yousaf Wani, hailing from Chararisherif, suffered a bullet wound in his thigh. Jahangir Ahmed Chechi, a Forester from Gogjipather, Chadoora, sustained minor superficial bruises, possibly from a fall. He received immediate medical attention at Pakerpora hospital and was discharged after first aid.

“The incident led to the filing of Case FIR No. 79/2023 under sections 16, 20 of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code, and Section 7/27 of the Indian Arms Act at PS Rajpora. Authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter,” police said.

It said, “Following the attack, the entire area was cordoned off by local police, army, and paramilitary forces. An extensive search operation is underway to locate the perpetrators. During the search of the crime scene, two empty cartridges of AK-47 ammunition and a bullet head were discovered.”

The security forces are continuing the cordon and search operation (CASO) in the region as they intensify efforts to apprehend the terrorists responsible for the attack. Updates on the investigation will follow as more information becomes available.
