Jammu, July 15: Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) Working President Raman Bhalla on Monday expressed serious concerns over the recent installation of smart meters in rural areas of Jammu district, citing a significant rise in power tariff bills for residents.
Addressing a gathering in Ward-73 Bhour Pind, Bhalla said that many households are struggling to manage their electricity costs after the sudden introduction of these meters.
“The people of Jammu have been diligently paying their electricity bills, but the abrupt installation of smart meters and subsequent high tariffs is unjust,” Bhalla said. He emphasized that the financially disadvantaged segments of the population would find it nearly impossible to pay these inflated bills. “We are not against smart meters, but authorities must consider the people’s ability to pay,” he added.
Condemning the government’s actions, Bhalla labelled the situation as “sheer injustice” and accused the authorities of high-handedness. He said that rural residents already face numerous challenges, and this development would only exacerbate their hardships. “Many people work tirelessly in the private sector to earn their livelihoods, yet the government fails to acknowledge their struggles,” he said.
The JKPCC leader also highlighted the lack of employment opportunities for educated youth, criticising the government for placing additional burdens on the poor. He called for immediate action to address these grievances, stating that the government has been implementing “anti-people measures” that seem to punish citizens rather than provide relief.
Bhalla warned that continued governmental indifference could lead to strong resistance from the public. He expressed concerns about the financial implications of the smart meters, saying that they would further strain already struggling households. “Most people here are poor and cannot afford hefty bills,” he said, urging the government to reconsider its approach.
The Congress leader further criticised the BJP government for its policies, claiming it has led to increased poverty, unemployment, and debt in Jammu and Kashmir. “Instead of asking for votes, the BJP should seek forgiveness from the public for its failures,” he said.
Bhalla called on the weaker sections of society to rally around Rahul Gandhi’s leadership for a better future. “Congress party has a rich history of advocating for the rights of Dalits and other marginalized groups,” he said.
