Excerpts:
How did your tryst with dream world of Bollywood begin
Bollywood’s rich history, spanning decades of cinematic excellence, played a significant role in fostering an inclination towards bollywood. The evolution of film-making techniques, the emergence of talented actors and directors, and the industry’s commitment to pushing boundaries fueled my admiration towards Bollywood. I came to appreciate its impact on culture and its ability to reflect societal issues, aspirations, and values.
How and when did you get your first break in Bollywood
I started my work several years ago in a local line production house, I was awestruck by exposure to its diverse storytelling, captivating performances, and ability to resonate with audiences on emotional levels. That is when I decided to move to dream city, Mumbai .
After a brief period of struggle and lots and lots of interviews I got my first job in Mumbai in a Debaker banerjee series which was named ‘Freedom;, I worked as an assistant art director. It likely marked my start of an exciting journey in the world of Indian cinema.
If you could brief us about the role of art director in a movie
The role of an art director in Bollywood, or any film industry, is crucial for creating the visual aesthetic and atmosphere for a film. They work closely with the director and production team to conceptualize and execute the artistic vision of the film. This involves overseeing the design of sets, construction, props, and overall visual style to ensure consistency and authenticity throughout the project
Additionally, their creative input helps to enhance the storytelling and immerse the audience in the world of the film.
Tell us about your journey in Bollywood so far
I have had the privilege to be part of several projects that have enriched my experience and allowed me to contribute creatively to the industry. One of my notable projects is CREW, where I worked as Art Director. This project was particularly memorable for me because I was working with big names of the industry and it was quite intimidating sometimes, and being a part of such a huge production really gave me something to be proud of myself and it marked a milestone in my journey so far.
Another project that I’m proud to have been a part of is Thank You For Coming. It was an exhilarating experience to be a part of this as well. This was also a big break as an art director in such a big production house “Anil Kapoor Films And Communications NetworK”
Additionally, I had the opportunity to work on Heer Sara(yet to be released). This project allowed me to learn aspects of an outdoor shoot, as it was shot in various parts of India other than Mumbai.
Each of these projects has played a significant role in shaping my journey in Bollywood, teaching me valuable lessons, and reaffirming my passion for storytelling through film. Also I have assisted in many projects before becoming an art director. These projects include Freedom, Rangbaaz 3, Ramsetu.
Recent blockbuster CREW has entered 100 cr club, share your experience of working in the movie
For me, Crew started when my worthy Production Designer (my boss) Disha Dey called me and asked if I was interested in a movie with all the A lister actors and other big shots of the industry. I just took a leap of faith which Alhamdulillah turned into success and I can’t be happy enough about it.
Knowing that your work is reaching and resonating with a wide audience is incredibly rewarding. It’s a validation of your talent and efforts, and it can open up new opportunities and avenues for your career in the industry. Overall, being a part of a blockbuster movie is a thrilling and unforgettable experience that leaves a lasting impact on both your professional journey and personal satisfaction.
What are your upcoming projects
Currently I am working on a web series for amazon prime ‘Maa Kasum’ which was recently announced. Looking forward to doing more big projects in near future and making my beloved Kashmir more proud.
