Srinagar, July 05: The residents of several colonies of the Hyderpora area in Srinagar are facing immense hardship due to an inadequate drainage system.
The locals told Rising Kashmir that the malfunctioning mechanism has caused overflowing drains, leading to water seepage into homes, causing significant inconvenience to them.
They said that previously, the functional dewatering system was effectively controlling water levels, ensuring a smooth drainage process. “However, due to unknown reasons, the dewatering system was relocated, resulting in a disruption of the drainage flow. Consequently, the water is now overflowing onto the streets and seeping into homes, causing waterlogging and posing health risks,” they said.
The residents said the drainage system was initially part of the government’s comprehensive city drainage project, which aimed to improve the overall infrastructure.
Previously, natural streams in the area facilitated the smooth flow of water, preventing any waterlogging concerns. However, after the implementation of the drainage system, the small pipes became clogged, exacerbating the issue, they added.
The locals said the anticipated outsourcing for the drainage was never constructed, leading to the current situation of overflowing drains.
Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, a local, told Rising Kashmir that the substantial investment made by the government in this drainage project seems to have gone to waste. “For four long years, we have been left to bear the consequences, with no respite in sight,” he said.
He urged the government to immediately install a temporary dewatering pump to alleviate their suffering while a permanent solution is sought.
Another local Abdul Rashid Bhat questioned the government’s commitment to their welfare. While appealing to the authorities, he said if the government aspires to develop a smart city, why is the issue of inadequate drainage being repeatedly overlooked?
“The streets are inundated, hindering our children and elders from venturing out. Garbage accumulation has compounded the problem, making our lives unbearable,” Bhat added.
SE Drainage Circle SMC Srinagar, Shahi Jaan Muhammad told Rising Kashmir that he would investigate the matter thoroughly. “I will check all the details from my subordinates and will look into this,” he said.
