Srinagar, Aug 15: Srinagar District Congress Committee (DCC) on Friday celebrated 79th Independence Day at M.A. Road Party office and unfurled the tricolour, followed by a guard of honour ceremony.In a function held at the party’s Srinagar office, senior Congress leaders, block presidents and workers participated and exchanged greetings, according to a statement issued here.District Congress Committee President Irfan Naqib, who was the chief guest, unfurled the Tricolour followed by a guard of honour by the CRPF contingent. The programme witnessed jubilation by Congress workers and CRPF personnel, who sang the National Anthem.Senior leader Surinder Singh Channi, Dr Audil Farooq Mir Lasjan, Mushtaq Ahmad Bazaz and various other leaders were present on this occasion.Congress workers exchanged greetings and distributed sweets and pledged to remain committed to serving the nation to the best of their ability.Speaking on the occasion, Irfan Naqib highlighted the selfless services and supreme sacrifices of freedom fighters during the freedom struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi to achieve freedom from British colonial rule.”We are here to remember our freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the dignity and honour of the nation and achieved freedom from the slavery and the barbarism of the British,” he said.Naqib laid strong emphasis on remaining committed to the cause of serving the nation, strengthening the democracy and democratic institutions.
