‘Hernia Summit’ at GMC Sgr brings together India’s top surgeons

Srinagar, July 13: The two-day national-level Hernia Summit organized by Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar concluded on Saturday and brought together top surgeons and doctors across the country.
The conference was conducted at Department of Minimal Access and General Surgery, GMC Srinagar by the Hernia Society of India, the largest body of hernia surgeons in India.
A spokesperson of GMC Srinagar said the conference focused on the concept of comprehensive care for every type of hernia and stressed g on latest minimal access techniques and the complex hernias.
The event is organised by GMC Srinagar under the patronage of PMC and Dean Prof Iffat Hassan Shah, Prof. Iqbal Saleem Mir, HOD Surgery as Organising Chairperson, Prof M R Attri is the Organising Secretary of the event.
The first day of the event included a live operative workshop whereby minimal access hernia surgeons performed surgeries for both complicated and uncomplicated hernias.
The event represents a tremendous opportunity for the surgeons across J&K, especially youngsters to hone the craft and learn from the masters as well for the patients who would directly and indirectly benefit from the event.
Dr Iqbal Saleem Mir said the summit was aimed to showcase the full spectrum of hernia operations, bridging the expertise from both national centers and local institutions.
“We’re not just demonstrating techniques; we’re opening a window into the diverse approaches to hernia repair that are currently being employed across India,” he said.
The event aimed to ensure that such patients receive appropriate and effective treatment, and to familiarize the medical community with the latest advancements in hernia repair.
Officials said the live surgeries were broadcast from two operation theatres at GMC Srinagar to audiences in the college auditorium besides that the procedures were streamed on YouTube.
The summit also saw the presence of Dr Vijay Borgaonkar, President of the Hernia Society of India, who in his speech designated the Department of Minimal Access & General Surgery at GMC Srinagar as a “Centre of Excellence in Hernia Surgery.”
Other notable attendees included Dr Sarfaraz Baig, Secretary, Hernia Society of India, and Prof. Dr. Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal GMC Srinagar.
Officials said the second day of the summit was dedicated to academic excellence, featuring an array of speakers from various parts of the country and distinguished faculty from within the Union Territory who presented their presentations on varied subjects.
The experts delivered comprehensive talks on diverse topics related to surgery, providing attendees with valuable knowledge and updates in the field.
