Heavy rainfall lash plains, fresh snowfall in upper reaches for 4th consecutive day

Srinagar, Aug 30: Heavy rains lashed plains Kashmir and higher reaches received light snowfall for 4th straight day on Friday, while meteorological department has forecasted improvement in prevailing weather conditions from today onward.
Over the past three days, continuous rainfall in Kashmir has led to flood-like situations in various parts of the valley. However due to rainfall, the water level in water bodies has increased.
Director MeT Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that as forecasted rains lash plains and very light snowfall was recorded in higher reaches for 4th straight day.
Srinagar received 23.6 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours while Qazigund received 14.4 mm of rainfall, Pahalgam 34.7 mm of rainfall, Jammu 16.7 mm of rainfall, Kokernag 20.8 mm of rainfall, Gulmarg 6.7 mm of rainfall.
Similarly, very light snowfall was reported in the upper reaches of Peer Ki Gali, Sinthan top, Razdan pass, Zojila pass, Sadhana pass, Machil and Karna areas on Friday.
“Between 31st Aug-1st Sept, weather will remain generally dry with brief spells of Rain/thundershower at isolated places,” he said.
Director MeT further said from 2nd to 3rd September, weather will remain generally cloudy with possibility of spell of light to moderate thundershower showers at many places.
Due to incessant overnight rainfall, many parts of Srinagar city witnessed water logging. Following the inclement weather, a massive dip was witnessed in temperatures in the valley. There was increase water level in river Jhelum other water bodies in the region
The water level has increased in some nallas and river tributaries in Kashmir and it may increase if rains continue throughout the night. Tributaries in south Kashmir are filled with rainfall water, but there is no situation of floods in the valley.
Meanwhile, one person died and two others were injured on Friday when a vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a shooting stone along the Mughal Road which connects Shopian district with Rajouri and Poonch.
A police official said that a Maruti car (JK11A-4674) was on its way from Kashmir Valley to Bufliaz and came under the shooting stone at Chatta Pani in Surankote area of Poonch district.
“Three persons travelling in the vehicle were injured. They were later shifted to hospital where one of them identified as Shahzad Ahmad son of Saif Ullah of Gambir Mughla Rajouri succumbed to injuries. Two others, Mohammad Afzal son of Shah Mohammad and Lal Hussain son of Shab Din, also residents of Gambir Mughlan Rajouri, are under treatment,” he said, adding that the case has been registered at PS Rajouri.
Meanwhile, traffic movement on Mughal Road has been stopped due to inclement weather for the last couple of days in Jammu and Kashmir.
In order to avoid any untoward incident and risk of life, traffic authorities were requested to close the Mughal Road for vehicular movement till the weather improves.
A traffic spokesman said that all sorts of traffic movement has been stopped on the road due to inclement weather. He said that the road has been closed as a precautionary measure as there are apprehensions of shooting stones and landslides on the stretch due to inclement weather.
“The road will be opened for traffic after improvement in weather conditions,” he said and advised people not to travel on the road for now
Meanwhile, a traffic police spokesman said subject to fair weather and better road conditions LMVs Passenger/Private Cars/HMVs shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW (NH-44) on Saturday.
Other roads including Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road (NH-244, Srinagar-Leh road and Bhaderwah-Chamba road are through for vehicular movement.
