Srinagar, March 24: The Government of Jammu and Kashmir has announced the completion and operational status of two new Indoor Sports Halls in Udhampur district—one at Subash Stadium Udhampur and the other one at Ramnagar. These facilities are now open for sports activities, aimed to enhance athletic opportunities in the region.
Responding to a query from MLA Pawan Kumar Gupta during the Assembly session, the Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma detailed the project’s progress. The Government of India, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, had sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the initiative in 2016, allocating Rs 6.82 crore for a new Pavilion and Rs 3.18 crore for allied works, including PU flooring, ACP cladding, retaining walls, a walking track, a mini pavilion, and a basketball court.
However, delays arose after CBRI Roorkee’s 2019 report suggested a redesign of the existing Pavilion structure, built by the Public Works (R&B) Department in 2011. The redesign was only finalised in 2021, leading to setbacks in construction. Despite this, the J&K Sports Council has now initiated work on a new Pavilion building, with the foundation and ground floor slab completed. Steel installation for the second-floor columns is currently underway, with a projected completion by December 2025.
Additionally, the government has committed Rs 15 lakh towards the renovation of the Badminton Indoor Hall at Udhampur Mini Stadium for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 fiscal years. The minister further stated that additional requests for new playfields in Pancheri and Mongri would be considered based on the availability of financial resources and encumbrance-free land.
