Srinagar, Jan 01: In the wake of prevalent cold and freezing weather conditions, the department of Orthopaedics, Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar, has issued a list of dos and don’ts urging people to take necessary precautions to avoid accidents and injuries.
Prof. (Dr.) Altaf Ahmad Kawoosa, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at GMC Srinagar said that the prevailing cold weather increases the risk of accidents and poses challenges to bone and joint health, making people more vulnerable to injuries.
He advised elderly individuals to take extra care during winter months to avoid accidents. “Elderly people are particularly susceptible to falls and injuries, so they should remain cautious at all times,” he said.
For those using two-wheelers, Prof. Altaf urged caution, stating, “Many people ride motorbikes during the winter, and slippery conditions can lead to life-threatening injuries. Extra care should be taken while traveling on two-wheelers.”
He also highlighted the dangers of snow-related activities, especially when snow falls from rooftops or during shoveling from heights.
“Falling from a building or height can result in severe injuries, including fractures and spinal cord injuries. Precautions must be taken to avoid such accidents,” he said.
Prof. Altaf stressed safe driving practices during slippery winter conditions, advising drivers to maintain safe distances on roads, adhere to speed limits, and drive cautiously to avoid mishaps.
The senior doctor advised patients to be more vigilant when children play outside, engage in snow shoveling, or create snow sculptures.
In the event of an injury, Prof. Altaf strongly recommended consulting a doctor rather than resorting to traditional or unverified treatments, which can worsen the condition.
To maintain musculoskeletal health during winter, he advised people to ensure adequate protection, including gloves and thermals, to prevent aggravation of pre-existing ailments.
“Engage in light indoor exercises to maintain joint flexibility and reduce stiffness. Wear footwear with good grip to minimize the risk of slipping on icy surfaces,” he said.
Prof. Altaf also suggested people consume foods rich in calcium and vitamin D to strengthen bones and support overall health.
“These measures will help protect your joints, minimize discomfort, and promote better musculoskeletal health throughout the cold season,” he said.
