Ganderbal, Dec 24: The residents of Gund area of Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district Tuesday demanded a Degree College in the area stating that the students have to travel to long distances to get admission in other colleges.
Residents of Gund, a tehsil with a significant population stretching from Surfraw to Sarbal Sonamarg, have been demanding a degree college for years. Currently, students pursuing higher education are compelled to travel to Kangan or Ganderbal colleges, which are far from their hometown.
“We have been seeking a degree college for a long time, but the government has yet to meet this genuine demand. The absence of a local college is causing immense inconvenience to students,” a local resident said.
The lack of a degree college in Gund forces thousands of students to undertake long commutes, wasting valuable time. “Traveling to Kangan or Ganderbal for college takes up much of our day. If the government establishes a degree college in Gund, it will save our time and ease our academic challenges,” a student expressed.
The civil society of Tehsil Gund has repeatedly raised the issue with authorities, but their appeals have yet to yield results. Now, they are urging the MLA of Kangan and the Health and Medical Education Minister to address their demand.
“This is a genuine need for the tehsil, and it is high time the government fulfils it to prevent further hardship for the students,” a member of the civil society stated. As the government continues its efforts to strengthen the education system, the residents of Gund hope their long-standing plea for a degree college will finally be heard and acted upon.
