Srinagar, May 24: Situated on the 47-kilometer Srinagar-Gulmarg highway, connecting many tourist resorts, Magam town, a business hub in Budgam district has been given a new look with pink colour as part of the G20 Summit in Kashmir .
Executive Officer, Municipal Committee Magam, Ajaz Ahmad said as part of the G20 Summit, they took many measures including beautification of the town.
“The first thing we did was painting pink on the shops and other business establishments in the town. Before that we took suggestions from the people, traders and other concerned stakeholders and chose the pink colour for the town,” he said.
The EO said over the past several years the Magam town was congested and they wanted to beautify the town.
“Earlier, when people would visit Magam they would not get the positive vibes in the town. And today people also say that the beautification has changed the town,” he said.
Ajaz also said that they have also painted the walls depicting Kashmir’s unique beauty, handicrafts, art and culture alongside the roads leading to Tangmarg and Gulmarg.
The EC MC Magam also said that footpaths and street lights in the town have also got a makeover and the bridge in the town has also been beautified.
“There were a lot of encroachments on the roads and footpaths which have been cleared and pedestrians walk freely without any hindrance. It has also attracted customers who visit the town for shopping purposes,” he said.
“We have also installed head mass lights within the limits of the town. We have also installed tri-colour strips that illuminate as part of the beautification of the G20 Summit,” he said.
Local residents of Magam have also appreciated the efforts of the MC Magam.
Sajad Hussain, a resident of Magam said overall the efforts of beautification of the town were good and it will invite and attract more and more people. “The MC Magam stood to the occasion and made efforts although the G20 event was not held at Gulmarg,” he said.
