In the wake of the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu – famously known as the ‘City of Temples,’ is swiftly transforming into a ‘Smart City,’ following in the footsteps of several other Indian cities handpicked by the Government of India (GoI). The removal of Article 370, which had previously led to hindrances and disparities in extending central laws to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, has paved the way for substantial progress and development.
The ambitious Jammu Smart City Project, with a total of 122 projects earmarked for the region, has gained significant momentum, as reported by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Rahul Yadav. Out of these, an impressive 84 projects have already been successfully completed, and work on the remaining 40 projects is rapidly progressing to meet the deadline set by the central government. The GoI has stipulated that Jammu will achieve Smart City status by March next year, with a strict deadline of June 2024.
One of the remarkable advantages witnessed after Article 370’s abrogation is the elimination of cost escalation in Smart City projects. The extension of central laws and adherence to tender terms have ensured that project delays or timely completions won’t burden taxpayers with increased expenses.
The COVID-19 pandemic, albeit a temporary setback, slowed down the pace of some projects, but the CEO reassures that the focus remains on swift execution and completion. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the Jammu Smart City Ltd (JSCL) has successfully delivered 84 projects, amounting to Rs 1479.35 crore. Presently, the work is in full swing on the 40 ongoing projects, which collectively represent an estimated cost of around Rs 2102.52 crores.
The transformation of Jammu into a Smart City involves various aspects, and several noteworthy projects have already come to fruition. These include the establishment of an Integrated Command Control and Centre (ICCC), the widening of Jewel Chowk, expansion of Apsara Road, implementation of an Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS), and the splendid beautification of the iconic Bahu Fort.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed remarkable progress under the Smart Cities Mission, with a total of 187 projects, worth over Rs 4000 crore, already completed. Simultaneously, work continues on the remaining 122 projects, spread across both the capital cities of J&K, under the close monitoring of the Housing and Urban Development Department.
Officials affirm that all issues related to the Smart City projects are being diligently addressed at the highest levels in the administration to ensure timely completion as per the set timeline.
As the City of Temples embarks on its journey to becoming a Smart City, the nation eagerly watches the transformation unfold, signaling a brighter and more technologically advanced future for Jammu and its residents.
