Bhubaneswar, Nov 29: Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah, today inaugurated the 59th DGsP/IGsP Conference 2024 in Bhubaneswar.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the proceedings on the 2nd and 3rd days of the conference, which is being held in a hybrid format.
The event is being attended by the Directors General and Inspectors General of Police (DGsP/IGsP) from all states and union territories, along with heads of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Central Police Organizations (CPOs), both in person and virtually by officers of various ranks from across the country. The conference also saw the participation of National Security Advisor, Ministers of State for Home Affairs, and Union Home Secretary.
During the inauguration, Amit Shah presented Police Medals for Meritorious Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau and released the Ministry of Home Affairs’ book on the ‘Ranking of Police Stations 2024’. He also awarded trophies to the top three best-performing police stations.
In his address, the Home Minister commended the police leadership for the successful and smooth conduct of the General Elections 2024 and the effective implementation of three new Criminal Laws. He expressed satisfaction with the significant improvements in the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East, and Left-Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected areas.
Shah highlighted that the introduction of the three new Criminal Laws has shifted India’s criminal justice system from being punishment-focused to one that is more justice-oriented, with the spirit of these laws rooted in Indian tradition.
The Union Home Minister further emphasized the crucial role of the security establishment in achieving Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047 and making India the world’s third-largest economy by 2027. He stressed the need to address emerging security challenges, particularly along the Eastern border, immigration issues, and trends in urban policing. Shah also called for a zero-tolerance approach towards security threats, urging for proactive action to implement a zero-tolerance policy across the country.
Over the next two days, the police leadership will collaborate to develop a roadmap for tackling both existing and emerging national security challenges, including LWE, coastal security, narcotics, cybercrime, and economic security. The conference will also review the progress of the implementation of the new Criminal Laws, as well as the adoption of best practices in policing across India.
