The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Anantnag, Dr Basharat Qayoom on Saturday held a detailed meeting for decongesting the roads in Anantnag town.

Chief Executive Officer, MC Anantnag informed the chair that several interventions have been proposed for decongesting the roads. He said that alternate land for sumo stands has been identified and necessary work is underway. He said that a new Bypass has been proposed from Janglat Mandi onwards to reduce the flow of traffic into the town area.

The DC said that roadside parking should not be tolerated and advocated imposing heavy fines on violators. He directed Tehsildar Anantnag to finalise the demarcation of additional land for shifting the sumo stand.

Further, he issued directions for identifying encroachments on the road from Janglat Mandi to Donipawa which is a choke point for traffic leaving the town so that widening can be taken up. He pressed for finalizing the formalities for construction of a parallel bridge at Ashajipora.

He also stressed on full utilization of existing parking spaces and zero tolerance for roadside illegal parking to ease out traffic and avoid congestion.

The DC said that mandatory parking space must be identified in commercial structures coming up in the town. He also stressed that passenger vehicles should not be allowed to book fares on roadsides and to avoid overcrowding.

There was added focus on ensuring that roads leading to hospitals are manned and violators booked so that free movement of emergency vehicles is not hindered.

The meeting was attended by ACR, SE R&B, Ex En R&B, DySP HQ, DySP Traffic, Tehsildar Anantnag and ARTO.
