Pulwama, Aug 01: Flash floods triggered by excessive rainfall in the upper reaches struck Khrew town in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Thursday, causing significant disruption in the area.
Officials reported that the flash floods hit 10:30 am, overwhelming local drains leading to widespread flooding that affected some houses, shops, and roads.
Local residents reported that vegetable crops were also impacted by the floods.
Despite the prompt response from the Municipal Committee Khrew, which swiftly deployed men and machinery, including JCBs and sanitation workers, to clear blocked roads and drainage systems, the excessive rainwater and flash floods caused panic among residents.
Residents highlighted that the flash floods originated from Pukhribal, Zantrag, and Bathina, inflicting damage on roads and jamming the drainage system.
Irfan Ahmad Bhat, a shopkeeper, voiced his concerns, stating that such incidents occur frequently and urged the Municipal Committee Khrew to clean the drainage to prevent future occurrences. He noted that these flash floods happen 2-3 times a year and cause significant damage to local shops.
Tehsildar Pampore visited the affected area and confirmed that water from the flash floods entered five shops, one residential house, and a government building.
He attributed the flash floods to excessive rainfall in the upper reaches of Khrew.
The Tehsildar mentioned that their team is currently assessing the damage caused by the floods, and a detailed report will be sent to the government.
