Srinagar, Aug 30: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and DDC member Srinagar, Er Aijaz Hussain, on Saturday expressed deep concern over the hardships faced by families affected due to the recent floods in different areas of the valley. He said the floods have caused widespread losses to agriculture, horticulture, and residential structures, leaving hundreds of families distressed and vulnerable. “The destruction of standing crops and orchards has directly impacted the livelihood of farmers and fruit growers, while structural damages have rendered many families homeless. These families deserve immediate attention and rehabilitation as a priority,” he said in a statement issued here.Er Aijaz urged the Jammu & Kashmir government to launch a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package for the affected families, ensuring proper compensation for crop losses, orchard damages, and structural reconstruction. “Timely assessment and disbursement of relief would help restore people’s confidence and reduce their suffering,” he said. The BJP leader appealed to the Union government and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to extend a special relief package for Jammu & Kashmir in view of the scale of damage caused by the floods. “Agriculture and horticulture are the backbone of our economy, and any setback to these sectors has a long-term impact on society at large. Therefore, special intervention from the Centre is crucial at this stage,” he said.Er Hussain underscored the urgent need for the government to come out with a concrete and long-term flood mitigation plan so that such disasters are managed effectively in the future. “People should not be left to suffer due to lapses or mismanagement. A proper strategy for flood prevention, better drainage, and disaster preparedness is the need of the hour,” he remarked. “The affected families cannot be left to struggle on their own. Their rehabilitation must be prioritised so they can rebuild their homes and livelihoods with dignity,” he added. While appealing to the administration to adopt a proactive and transparent approach in addressing the crisis, Er Aijaz also called upon social and voluntary organisations to step forward in assisting the affected families during this challenging time.He reaffirmed his resolve to remain the voice of the people in every forum and to continue raising the genuine concerns of the common citizens until concrete action is taken.
