Er Aijaz Hussain, DDC Lalchowk and Senior BJP Leader, today successfully inaugurated the long-pending initiative for sand mining extraction from the River Jhelum in Srinagar, addressing an issue that has affected hundreds of local miners for years.

The initiative revives traditional or customary mining practices, which were halted in 2019 despite receiving permission.

Through his persistent efforts, Er Aijaz Hussain has facilitated the identification of six key spots for traditional mining along the river, providing a lifeline to the local community dependent on this industry. The move is set to ensure sustainable mining practices while benefiting hundreds of people involved in the trade.

To mark the occasion, Er Aijaz Hussain personally saw off the first vehicle carrying sand from Padshahibagh, symbolizing the official reopening of the mining operations. The local community expressed deep gratitude to him for his dedication in resolving the issue and making this long-awaited initiative a reality.

Er Aijaz Hussain also extended heartfelt thanks to Honourable Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha Ji, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Dr. Bilal Mohiuddin, Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control, Director of Geology and Mining Department, DMO Srinagar, and all concerned line departments for their unwavering support and efforts in mitigating the challenges faced by the local mining community. His appreciation highlighted the collective commitment of the administration in making this initiative possible.

During his address, Er Aijaz Hussain emphasized the importance of not only reviving an age-old industry but also ensuring the extraction process is environmentally sustainable. He acknowledged the significant role that traditional mining plays in the livelihoods of the people in Srinagar and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that benefit the local community and foster sustainable development.

“This initiative has been a long time coming, and I’m proud to have played a part in ensuring that our traditional mining practices are not only revived but also managed in a way that supports both our people and the environment,” said Er Aijaz Hussain.

The reopening of sand mining operations is expected to provide much-needed economic support to the region, ensuring a steady supply of materials for local construction projects.

Er Aijaz Hussain was accompanied by Shri Umer Shafi, Constituency President Lalchowk during the visit.
