Pulwama, Dec 22: Apple orchardists are being advised by horticulture experts to prioritize soil testing before applying agricultural lime or gypsum.
Dr. Jahangir, Assistant Professor at SKUAST- Kashmir’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Pulwama, stressed the paramount importance of soil health for orchard success, particularly emphasising the critical role of pH levels.
According to Dr. Jahangir, maintaining the required pH level is crucial for apple trees, which thrive in slightly acidic to neutral soils within the pH range of 5.5 to 7.
When soil tests reveal acidity levels below this ideal range, farmers are advised to use agricultural lime (Calcium Carbonate) to raise the pH, creating a more conducive environment for apple tree growth.
Conversely, when pH levels rise above 7, the use of gypsum (Calcium Phosphate) is recommended.
The expert highlighted the necessity of conducting comprehensive soil tests that assess not only pH levels but also nutrient concentrations. This information enables farmers to make informed decisions tailored to the specific needs of their orchards.
Timing was underscored as a critical factor in orchard care.
Dr. Jahangir recommended applying agricultural lime or gypsum in the fall or early spring, allowing sufficient time for the lime to react with the soil before the upcoming growing season.
This proactive approach ensures that the soil is adequately prepared to support the nutritional requirements of apple trees.
Emphasising the dynamic nature of orchards, Dr. Jahangir stressed the need for regular assessments of soil conditions and pH levels to make necessary adjustments.
The experts cautioned against viewing the application of agricultural lime or gypsum as a one-size-fits-all endeavour.
He explained that the amount of lime needed per tree varies based on factors such as soil type and lime product specifications.
Farmers were encouraged to seek guidance from local agricultural extension services or consult with soil fertility experts for precise recommendations.
