Srinagar, Sep 16:
In a significant development during the ongoing encounter in Anantnag, South Kashmir, security forces have successfully unearthed multiple terrorist hideouts and caves, believed to be utilized by the terrorists. The operation, now in its fourth day, involves the use of advanced drones, mortar shells, and helicopters to target suspected areas where two-three terrorists are believed to be trapped.
The operation in the dense forest area of Kokernag was launched in the wake of a tragic encounter on September 13, in which four security forces personnel lost their lives at the hands of terrorists. As the operation continues, a senior Army officer revealed that several hideouts had been destroyed, which were crucial to the terrorists’ activities during the ongoing standoff.
“We utilized drones and helicopters to pinpoint the terrorists’ locations, subsequently initiating controlled explosions during the early hours of Saturday,” the senior Army officer stated. “Loud explosions, facilitated by drones, were employed to ascertain the terrorists’ positions. This marks one of the most extensive operations in recent years, leveraging cutting-edge technology to minimize collateral damage.”
Para commandos were deployed on Saturday in specific forest patches within the area. These commandos covered key regions and installed high-beam lights to enhance visibility. Explosions resonated from the encounter area throughout the day, persisting late into the evening.
“We have encircled the terrorists from all sides, with over 25 companies of security forces deployed. Our progress remains steadfast,” the officer affirmed.
Meanwhile, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi conducted a comprehensive review of the operational situation in the Kokernag forest area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday. During the briefing, ground commanders outlined the high-intensity operation, emphasizing the utilization of cutting-edge surveillance equipment and precision firepower by the security forces.
In the initial stages of the operation, Colonel Manpreet Singh, the commanding officer of the 19 Rashtriya Rifles unit of the Army, Major Ashish Dhonchak, Deputy Superintendent of Jammu and Kashmir Police Humayun Bhat, and a soldier lost their lives in the Gadole area of Kokernag.
The gunfight erupted early on Wednesday morning when the Army and police jointly launched an operation to track down terrorists hiding within the dense forests of Kokernag.
