Samba, Kathua, Aug 07: In a determined effort to prevent road accidents and enforce discipline among public transport operators, the Traffic Police Rural Jammu has launched a special drive across Samba and Kathua districts targeting overloading and other traffic violations.According to a statement issued here, the campaign, which commenced today (August 7), will continue over the coming days. It is being conducted under the overall supervision of G.L. Sharma, SSP Traffic Rural Jammu, with Sukhdev Singh, Dy. SP Traffic Samba-Kathua, and concerned DTIs and SOs Traffic monitoring enforcement on the ground. The primary objective of the drive is to curb the menace of overloading in passenger vehicles and to take stern action against habitual violators. The initiative aims to ensure that commercial passenger vehicle owners and drivers strictly follow the Motor Vehicles Act and related rules. During Thursday’s operations, 39 vehicles — including 18 buses (one school bus), 14 mini-buses, and 7 light passenger vehicles — were challaned for various violations, with overloading being the most common offence. Notably, 3,526 vehicles have been challaned for overloading by Traffic Rural Jammu so far this year. Repeat offenders have been recommended for cancellation of registration certificates and route permits. In tandem with enforcement measures, regular road safety awareness programmes are being conducted across the jurisdiction of Traffic Police Rural Jammu.
