Jammu, Apr 20: “The Congress Party has continuously tried to distort Dr B R Ambedkar’s legacy for its own political gain,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Rajiv Jasrotia said on Sunday.
He was addressing a programme organised to honour Dr Ambedkar as part of the ongoing Bharat Ratna Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Samman Abhiyan. The event, held at Mandli Billawar, brought together various BJP leaders, including MLA Basholi Darshan Singh, MLA Kathua Dr Bharat Bhushan, and DDC Chairman Mahan Singh, all paying tribute to the architect of the Indian Constitution on his birth anniversary.
Jasrotia addressed a gathering of local leaders and community members, shedding light on the historical opposition Dr Ambedkar faced from the Congress party. He said, “It was the Congress party that forced Dr Ambedkar to resign from the cabinet and consistently undermined his contributions, delaying the Bharat Ratna award until 1990.”
He said that a government led by the BJP was instrumental in finally honouring Dr Ambedkar.
The MLA accused the Congress of manipulating constitutional amendments for political advantage, saying, “Of the 106 amendments made, 75 were done merely for political gains.” He praised the BJP for implementing necessary amendments in the interest of the nation and its citizens.
Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Jasrotia said the government took initiatives to promote Dr Ambedkar’s ideals, including the development of Panchteerths and the declaration of November 26 as Constitution Day.
Other leaders, including MLAs Darshan Singh and Dr Bharat Bhushan, highlighted Dr Ambedkar’s significant role in framing the Indian Constitution and advocating for the rights of marginalised communities. They urged party activists to actively engage with economically weaker sections to ensure they receive the benefits of the Modi government’s welfare schemes.
DDC Chairman Mahan Singh and District President Gopal also paid tributes to Dr Ambedkar and reiterated the party’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and progressive India. They acknowledged Dr Ambedkar’s fight against social discrimination and called for continued efforts to implement his vision in contemporary society.
The programme concluded with a strong message of unity and commitment to uphold Dr Ambedkar’s principles.
