Ganderbal, Feb 11: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah visited Sonamarg on Tuesday to assess the damage caused by a massive fire that gutted at least 46 shops two days ago. Accompanied by MLA Kangan Mian Mehar Ali, Advisor Nasir Sogami, and Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Jatin Kishore, he inspected the affected market and interacted with shopkeepers to understand their concerns.
During his visit, the Chief Minister chaired a review meeting with the Beopar Mandal Association Sonamarg, where he reassured the traders of full government support. Immediate relief had already been announced, and the administration is committed to their rehabilitation and recovery. “The government stands with the affected shopkeepers in this difficult time. We will take all necessary steps to ensure their rehabilitation,” Omar Abdullah said.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Chief Minister stated, “Visited Sonamarg today, where a devastating fire caused significant damage to several shops, impacting many livelihoods. Assured the affected shopkeepers of full support, with immediate relief already announced. The government stands with them and will take all necessary steps to ensure their rehabilitation and recovery.”
The review meeting was attended by senior officials, including SSP Ganderbal Raghav S, CEO SDA, SDM, Tehsildar Gund, and other district officers. During the meeting, traders raised concerns, including the need for immediate financial assistance, permission for rebuilding, and the establishment of a fire service station in Sonamarg.
In response, the Chief Minister emphasized that the reconstruction of shops would follow a well-planned design, developed with input from all stakeholders, including the Tourism Department, District Administration, and SDA. He stressed that this approach would enhance safety and prevent such incidents in the future.
Highlighting the growing tourism in Sonamarg, especially after the opening of the tunnel, the CM also assured that a permanent fire service station would be established in the area. The location of the fire station would be finalized in consultation with relevant stakeholders to ensure quick emergency response.
Additionally, the Chief Minister confirmed the approval of financial assistance under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) for the affected shopkeepers, providing much-needed relief during this difficult time.
