Srinagar, Jan 30: The 40-day harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai-Kalan’ has ended, with only one spell of snowfall in the upper reaches of the Jammu and Kashmir region. However, the meteorological department predicts moderate to heavy snowfall in higher reaches and rain in plains until February 1 .
Director of the Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, forecasts the possibility of light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in many places in the Himalayan region over the next 36 hours. He highlights the chances of heavy snowfall on Tuesday night in various districts, including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg, with peak activity expected on January 31.
Dr. Mukhtar mentions the likelihood of light to moderate rain and snow between February 2nd and 4th. In Jammu Division, intermittent light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is expected in the plains, along with light snowfall in higher reaches during January 30-31 and February 3-4.
The weather system may lead to temporary road closures in higher reaches and important passes, such as Sinthan Pass, Mughal Road, and Zojila. Travelers are advised to plan accordingly. Farmers are also advised to withhold irrigation and fertilizer application during this period.
During the 40-day Chillai Kalan period, the valley experienced severe cold, with the coldest night recorded at minus 5.3°C on December 22nd. The dry and snowless winter has resulted in freezing nights and unusually warmer days.
The region has faced a significant 80 percent rainfall deficit in December, and Kupwara recorded 13.8 rainfall precipitation in January. Srinagar’s minimum temperature was 0.8°C, with daytime temperatures consistently exceeding eight degrees above normal. The Chillai-Kalan period is followed by ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) from January 31 to February 19 and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) from February 20 to March 1.
Due to fresh snowfall, traffic restrictions are in place on Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road and Mughal Road. The authorities have issued an avalanche warning for Ganderbal district, advising precautions and avoiding avalanche-prone areas until further notice.
