Kargil, Feb 7: Advisor to the Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh Dr Pawan Kotwal Friday chaired an important meeting to review the progress of the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Padum, Zanskar. This large-scale project, spanning 13.79 acres and with a total cost of Rs 81.82 crore, is poised to become Zanskar’s new District Hospital, a major step forward in improving healthcare services in the region.
The design of the CHC is specifically tailored to meet the unique challenges posed by Zanskar’s climate and cultural requirements, ensuring a facility that is both functional and sensitive to local needs. Dr. Kotwal emphasised the need for the centre to be equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology, including essential facilities such as MRI and CT Scan services, to serve the diverse healthcare needs of the local population.
During the meeting, Dr. Kotwal reviewed the progress of ongoing construction, the installation of medical equipment, and utility provisions for the CHC. He urged the concerned officials to maintain high standards of construction while ensuring timely completion of the project. The Advisor highlighted the importance of overcoming the logistical challenges posed by the region’s terrain and harsh weather, as well as the need for smooth coordination between authorities to avoid project delays. In keeping with the region’s unique environmental conditions, Dr. Kotwal instructed the use of a robust electrical system, avoidance of false ceilings, and the application of proven technology in the construction process. He also recommended that the CHC should be benchmarked against the SNM Hospital in Leh to ensure that it meets high healthcare standards.
This project marks a significant milestone in improving healthcare infrastructure in Ladakh, with the CHC in Padum set to offer critical medical services to a region that has long faced challenges in accessing quality healthcare. With the completion of the CHC, residents of Zanskar will have access to advanced medical facilities, improving the overall quality of life and healthcare outcomes for the local population.
