Leh, May 09: Amid heightened security concerns and growing anxiety among students, Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) of LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson, Friday convened a high-level meeting to assess the well-being and safety of Ladakhi students currently studying in Jammu, Chandigarh and Delhi.
The meeting was attended by DC, CEO LAHDC Leh Santosh Sukhadeve, RTO Mohammad Ashraf Bhat, Additional SP Rigzin Sangdup and DPO Leh Junaid Amin Bhat. Joining virtually were presidents of the major Ladakhi student unions from Chandigarh, Delhi and Jammu.
Student representatives provided updates on the ground situation in their respective locations. While no immediate threat has been reported, they noted that uncertainty and misinformation—especially during the ongoing examination period—have led to mild panic among students and concern among parents.
CEC Gyalson assured that the situation is being monitored closely in coordination with the Chief Secretary of J&K and respective district administrations. He emphasised that the welfare of Ladakhi students remains a top priority and all necessary support will be extended.
The CEC also confirmed having spoken with the Deputy Commissioner of Jammu, who assured full cooperation and vigilant oversight. He advised student unions to maintain close contact with local authorities to ensure swift communication and action, if needed. As a precautionary measure, CEC Gyalson instructed Liaison Officers to coordinate with transport departments and prepare evacuation logistics, including the readiness of buses. Student unions have been directed to prepare comprehensive lists of students and maintain clear communication to prevent confusion or overcrowding in case of any evacuation. In the event of a potential evacuation, temporary accommodation will be arranged at Ladakh Sarai and other designated locations. Similar contingency measures are being planned for students from Kargil. Alternate travel routes, including the Jammu–Manali road, are also being assessed.
CEC Gyalson reiterated that he is working in close coordination with the UT administration, student unions and relevant authorities to ensure a unified and effective response. He urged students and the public to refrain from acting on rumours and rely solely on official communication channels. He concluded with an appeal for calm, unity and vigilance, assuring that a detailed action plan is in place and regular updates will be shared with all stakeholders as the situation develops.
